I curated a list of articles to read if you are new to the coliving scene.
If you read the articles below and watch the talks, you will have a clear understanding of what coliving is, where it’s coming from and where it might be heading. After that, I recommend you to check out our list of more in-depth resources (magazines, studies, reports) to dig deeper into the field.
PS: I highly recommend to everyone to read them, regardless of how long you’ve been a coliving enthusiast ;)
Defining Coliving
- “Creandum’s Perspective on Coliving” describes different types of existing coliving models.
- “What is coliving?” by the Co-liv collective puts coliving in a societal and historical context.
- “What is coliving? A past, contemporary and future definition.” is a must-read to understand coliving definitions and various coliving models across history (draft in progress — leave me your comments!).
- Wikipedia’s Coliving page explains coliving as an “intentional community” and explains coliving history, present, and future from this point of view.
Founding Articles
- “As We May Live” dates back from 2015 and is Bruno Haid’s (Roam founder) declaration of how coliving can and should become the new way of living for a healtheir generation.
- In “Housing in an age of accelerations”, Rohan Silva, co-founder of SecondHome (an innovation space in the UK) explains how coliving can solve and change the current housing situation
- The Medium post “The rise of accidental co-living in London and how to make it a good thing” explains coliving and how a connection is being created within the wider society
- “Micro Apartments and Co-Living: the Future of Urban Living” explains how coliving is beyond the Millennial movement, and why it has a chance to become a larger trend.
- In “The Housing as a Service (HaaS) Revolution Has Begun”, StarCity founder Jon Dishotsky explains through research and trends why hassle-free coliving spaces have tremendous potential
- “What we learned scraping co-living space directories” is an infographic-based research by Kin giving an overview of the current coliving landscape.
- “The Rise of Intentional Downsizing and Co-Living” gives a good overview of what coliving is
- Learn in “The rise and fall (and rise?) of communal living” how communal living has its limitations and possible detrimental social impact if it’s not integrated on a larger societal scheme
- In “Why it’s time for intentional coliving”, Coliving Diaries founder Gui Perdrix calls for differentiation between residential and intentional coliving, encouraging colivers to follow the ladder.
- “There will be 1 billion digital nomads by 2035” by Nomadlist founder Pieter Levels gives you a taste of how the shift in remote work and lifestyle will affect both remote work and living
- “The Roaming Empire” by The Economics describes the search and encounter of fully nomadic people, their life choices and the coliving spaces behind them.
